Weekly Cleaning Tip For December 28th

Extending The Life Of Your Carpet

Carpet can last for years and still look good even in high traffic areas if taken care of.  Some quick tips on keeping your carpet looking good:

  • Vacuum weekly - This prevents excessive soil buildup and reduces wear on the carpet fibers
  • Use a carpet rake - A carpet rake (can be ordered online from Home Depot and other sources) is cheap (about $20) and helps break up soil and keeps and brings back the life in carpet that has been matted down.
  • Steam Clean every 3 months - Having a complete steam clean done on your carpet every 3 months for heavy traffic areas and every 6 months for low traffic will add years of life to your carpet.

Maintaining A Dust Free Home

Do you hate to dust? Is it time consuming and nasty? Well, we won’t say it’s not boring but we can help you save time.
First turn off the central air or heating/ac unit…don’t worry it won’t be for long. Take a long handled duster (Swiffer or microfiber) and dust molding and cobwebs. Then wipe down your ceiling fans and light fixtures. Next take a rag and spray it with an oil based polish (for your wood). Take all the knickknacks down, and then wipe your tables and shelves. Dust all picture frames and wall mounted objects. Wash or dust the knickknacks and place them back on the shelves and tables. Get your vacuum and use the brush attachment to do your blinds and baseboards. Finally replace all old filters and vacuum the vents. Turn your central air or other unit on. Your house will stay “dust-free” much longer.

Cleaning Your Counter Tops

Ever wonder how to clean those nasty stains off your counter top? Well if your counter tops are veneer then you are in luck!  Using simple household products like hydrogen peroxide and baking soda can get those ugly stains right out!

First make a paste of baking soda and the peroxide in a bowl.  Next spread a generous layer of paste on the stains.  Let dry. With a wet sponge scrub the spot in a circular motion.  Wipe clean.  Repeat if necessary.

DO NOT use this method on granite or marble, it will scratch and etch the counter tops.  For stone counter tops it is best to use a cleaner that is ph balanced for natural stone.  Products such as Sprayway and Granite Gold are best.

Cleaning Without Streaks!

White distilled vinegar can be your best friend when cleaning your home.  Do you hate how streaky or dull your floors look?  To prevent streaks and dull residue from cleaning products and to disinfect your ceramic tile floors or linoleum use 1 cup distilled white vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water.  Mop the floors and let dry (no need to rinse).  Wood floors can be cleaned by mopping with a solution of 1 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of water.  Wring out the mop really well and lightly mop over floors (DO NOT saturate), let dry.
To clean your windows and make them streak-free use undiluted white vinegar in a spray bottle, mist it on and clean it off with newspaper.  Remove a sticker from painted walls by saturating the corners and edges with undiluted vinegar on a cloth or sponge, then scrape off.  Remove any sticky residue with a bit more vinegar.   To clean your chrome or stainless steel around the home use undiluted white vinegar in a spray bottle, mist on and then buff with a soft cloth.
Not only is vinegar great at cleaning, it is very safe for your family.  It is a natural disinfectant, and bio-degradable.

Carpet Steam Cleaning Tips

When steam cleaning your carpet there are several factors you should consider:

- Use the right pre-stain treatment for deep soil / food stains - apply to areas 15 minutes before running a steam cleaner over them

- The temp of the water-solution in the steam cleaner.  If you aren't using a professional model then you are probably dependent on the tap water temperature - the hotter the better.  If you have a model that super heats the water to 250 degrees - great, otherwise try and get the water as hot as you can via tap water (130 degrees)

- Don't use too much carpet steam cleaning detergent - always mix water with detergent using the recommended ratio - extra detergent = bad results - not better results.

- Don't constantly go over the same area over and over with the steam cleaner.  This will over saturate the area and flood the carpet padding.  If you must make several passes wait until it dries then go over it again.
